Dr.Habash’s Published books
The past is like a car mirror that shows what behind, but still you have to drive ahead.
If we need Islam as a message in order to
renewal and innovation
We have to take the Torch of the fathers
Dr. Mohammed Habash adopts the religious renovation project which is considered an extension of Sheikh Muhammad Abduh’s School, Alafghani’s, Muhammad Iqbal’s , Malik bin Nabi’s, and Jawdat Said’s.
Dr. Habash grew up in the school of his father-in-law, Sheikh Ahmed Kuftaro, and he memorized The Holy Quran on the hands of Sheikh Mohammed Sukkar; then he participated in public work as a preacher, orator, imam, founder and director of the institutes of the Holy Quran in Syria. He wrote poetry and about Islamic thought, and he got his PhD in Islamic Studies From Khartoum University, under the supervision of Dr.Wihba Zoheily and the Scholar Mohammad Ali Al-Imam.
He engaged in political work and was twice elected deputies in the Syrian People’s Council – as an independent – also elected five times a member of the Presidency of the Council, and was twice elected as the President of the Assembly of Shariah Scholars, and was also elected as a Secretary of the Association of the book renewal in Cairo.
In the Parliament he adopted a number of legal and legislative issues, including the Nationality Law of the mother, the Syrian law custody, and Improvement Act regarding the salaries of the clergy men. He succeeded in preventing the phenomenon of advertising indecency in Syria, and was the only MP who demanded the abolition of Muslim Brotherhood execution law. He demanded abolition of emergency law and the one-party control and the removal of the security grip of intelligence and security from people’s lives.
He was chosen as a member of the Arab Writers Union, an honorary member in the union of Syrian Inventors, honorary member of the Union of Journalists, a member of the Board of Trustees at Aljazeera University in Syria, the Vice-President of the Global Forum for Moderation, a member of the Board of Trustees at the Islamic University in Islamabad, Vice- President of the Syrian Palestinian committee for right of return, and a founding member of Arab Democratic Network. He is currently a professor of Islamic Studies at Abu Dhabi University, a consultant of Doha international Center for religions dialogue, a consultant to the International Organization for Penal Reform, and a member of the International Parliamentary Union – defenders of Palestine.

In 2010 Craiova University, the most prestigious Romanian university, awarded Habash honor Ph.D. in the blue Hall at the university in a large official ceremony. This degree was awarded to Habash in recognition of his research and his activity in the dialogue of religions and in particular his book “Biography of Messenger of God”; his book was translated in the Romanian language and is taught in faculties of theology.
Sharia Scholars Association
The Association of Religious Rites -later renamed as Sharia Scholars Association- is the only assembly in Damascus sponsoring scholars, imams and preachers. It was founded fifty years ago by Sheikh Abul Khair AlMedani and Sheikh Hassan Hpennekh; it came as a complement activity of Sheikh Badr al-Din al-Hassani and Sheikh Ali Daker. It was established in Tenkez Mosque in the center of the capital- Damascus- on a vast land. This association played a leading role in the era of democracies where the center was the center for Islamic movement in Syria. The Assembly was marginalized since the beginning of the era of the Baath, a number of its leaders were arrested, and its role was limited to services for clergy living.
In 2004 members of the Board of Directors urged Dr. Muhammad Habash to apply for candidacy for the presidency of the Assembly, and Habash was chosen as a president of the Assembly, and then re-elected again in 2007. The Assembly included a large number of scholars, and became a center of Islamic movement in Syria. It launched the religious Fraternity Commission and the Muslim-Christian Committee. This awakening did not please the authoritarian regime, which saw it as a platform for the defense of rights and freedom and a seed for strengthening the role of civil society and the revival of the role of faith in life, so the Association was closed.
Participation in the Revolution
With the beginning of the revolution in Syria, Dr. Habash announced clear positions against the behavior of the security and intelligence in the repression and arbitrary arrest, and several times he declared that he would not defend a murderer.
Dr. Habash launched his famous initiative in Syria under the title: “The Third Way”, in order to collect the Syrians around the table of dialogue, to achieve justice and reconciliation, to liberate the army from the control of intelligence, and to stop political competition in Syria. But that position was considered a challenge to the regime, which insisted on the violent solution, rejected dialogue with militants, and insisted on destroying cities with tanks, rockets, and later airplanes.
With the aggravation of the revolution in Syria, Habash took a tough stance against the entrance of the army to the cities, and announced in The National Consultative Conference that Syria is witnessing a real revolution against oppression, injustice and oppression, and not a universal conspiracy as promoted by the official media. He insisted that salvation will be through stopping state intelligence, the return of the army to its barracks, and early elections under international supervision.
Many people saw Habash’s attitudes coordinated with the regime because it was beyond all red lines, but intelligence and Shabiha (Backed militia of the dictatorial regime ) were fed up with these positions and launched dozens of websites that betray the accused, Habash, and after a strong position in parliament – late 2011 – Habash was a goal for an assassination attempt where Shabiha chanted: “we want your head, Habash!”.
After surviving the assassination attempt, and after a series of threats to his wife and daughters, Habash left Damascus to the UAE where he is currently a professor of Islamic thought at Abu Dhabi University, and an international expert in the International Organization for Penal Reform.
In an article titled: “My Story with the Regime”, Dr. Habash stated that he would not join any team that believes in the armed change, and stressed his rejection of the militarization of the revolution, without denying the right of people to defend themselves. He considered the regime responsible for the crisis of two million Syrian families and that the Regime should leave under international supervision.
In August 2012 and with collaboration of the Local Human Rights Organization, Habash invited about forty Syrian Sharia Scholars to meet in Doha. Participants announced a clear position in the necessity to lay down arms by every soldier or officer in the Syrian army, and the prohibition of participation in any military activity with the Regime that pushed the army to a bloody confrontation with the people; a position that is fully consistent with Habash’s persistent calls to reject violence and call for harmony and peace.
With the increase of violence in all fronts in Syria, Habash has receded to his scientific role, and founded in Dubai a Centre for Islamic Studies.
The books issued by Dr. Habash are about 55 books dealing with issues of Islamic thought and national ideas, as well as he wrote about 1000 articles published in about thirty Arabic newspapers.
